The cash advance program offered by American Express (AMEX) is called Express Cash. It allows an individual to withdraw cash from a bank account, AMEX credit account, or more than 600,000 ATMs using an AMEX card.
Card holders must contact the AMEX Cash department at 1-800-CASH-NOW to enroll in the program and receive a PIN number. Only the company program administrator can initiate Express Cash enrollment for holders of corporate cards
The cardholder will need to provide requested personal information to the AMEX customer service representative. Once the individual has enrolled in the program, the American Express Web site can be used to locate a local ATM that accepts AMEX cards.
The person will need to insert the card into the ATM and enter the PIN number that was supplied. The money withdrawn should not be more than the cash advance limit on the account.
Some say that taking a cash advance on an AMEX card equates to requesting that AMEX close the account. The cardholder will forfeit any accumulated rewards when the account is closed, making cash advances unattractive to many cardholders.
If an advance is absolutely necessary, it should be taken using a credit card that the individual does not mind losing.
